What to put in a calm-down corner
A calm-down corner is a small, quiet spot where a child can take a break when feelings run big. It works at home or in a classroom, and it doesn’t have to be big or expensive.
The NEA’s calming-spaces checklist for educators lists comfortable seating, soft lighting, calm colors, visuals like breathing guides and emotion charts, and sensory tools like fidgets and noise-canceling headphones. Start with two or three, and add more as you see what gets used.
Keep it tidy and predictable, with only a handful of items out at once, and swap them out now and then. A pre-made kit isn’t required. Most corners get built one piece at a time.
- A soft place to sit: a rug, a floor cushion, or a wobble seat.
- Something to watch while breathing: a breathing ball, finger-trace boards, a liquid-motion bubbler, or a sensory bottle.
- A feelings chart: so a child can point to a feeling instead of explaining it.
- A visual timer: so the break has a clear, visible end.
- Quiet hands and quiet ears: a couple of silent fidgets, plus ear muffs for noisy rooms.
- One or two books: about breathing or calming down, kept in a basket.
